Job Description

Performs advanced protective service work planning, organizing, directing, and supervising law enforcement, investigation, and crime prevention programs and services, handling personnel and public information matters, ensuring that all laws, regulations, and procedures are followed; maintaining and preparing records and reports. Other duties include: planning, directing, and evaluating the operation of the department; recruiting personnel; assigning, directing, training and evaluating the work of staff; making public addresses; meeting with the news media; attending meetings and serving on committees, boards and agencies; supervising the maintenance of records and materials; developing annual budget and controlling expenses; developing leaders within the department; overseeing and developing programs to address crime and quality of life issues; developing programs or initiatives that enhance the relationships with the community, reduce crime, and improve quality of life; formulating and implementing police policy, procedures, rules, and regulations; and coordinating with other law enforcement agencies.

Hours: Monday-Friday; first shift. Flexible hours required.

To Compete in the Selection Process: Bachelor’s degree with coursework in law enforcement, public administration, or related field and extensive experience in police administration including supervisory experience. Comprehensive knowledge of laws, rules, and court decisions relating to criminal justice and law enforcement; methods of crime detection, criminal identification, and radio communication; controlling laws and ordinances; geography of the City. Must have skill in the use of personal computers and the ability to lead and direct the activities of law enforcement personnel; evaluate the effectiveness of the police operation and to institute improvements; deal with the public courteously and firmly and to establish and maintain satisfactory public relations; resourceful and use sound judgment in emergencies; analyze complex police problems and to adopt effective and reasonable courses of action; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Special requirements: Possession of Basic Law Enforcement Training certificate, completion of Management/Leadership training, and valid NC driver’s license upon hire. Must obtain Advanced Law Enforcement certification within 6 months of hire.
