Job Description

Performs administrative and technical work overseeing the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Treatment Plant and serves as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC). Responsibilities include: ensures compliance with regulatory agencies, state and federal laws; prepares and maintains records, reports and files; supervises staff in the daily operation and maintenance of the plant and related facilities; reviews plant compliance, control data, and lab results; implements changes in operation to maintain compliance; researches and implements corrective actions; develops preventive maintenance programs; schedules maintenance and calibration of equipment; schedules and logs daily staff assignments; prepares work orders; makes detailed maintenance, inspection, and safety tours of the plant; monitors and maintains pumps and equipment; monitors the plant SCADA system; collects samples and performs minor laboratory tests; maintains and monitors feed pumps and tanks; monitors and adjusts chemical flow; assists with the recruitment; reviews the staff performance; trains employees; assists with budget; reviews and prepares payroll; maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; responds to citizen inquiries; participates and serves as lead with respect to the Environmental Management System (EMS) requirements.

Hours: Monday-Friday; first shift. May be required to work outside of normal working hours in stand-by, on-call or other emergency situations.

To Compete in the Selection Process: Associates degree with coursework in chemistry, environmental science, or biology, with considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of a treatment plant including supervisory experience. Must have a thorough knowledge of methods, practices, procedures, tools, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of treatment plant and related facilities; processes and treatment stages involved in plant; and applicable safety regulations. . Demonstrated communication and leadership skills with the ability to operate personal computers. Special Requirements: Valid NC Driver’s License and possession of North Carolina Grade IV Wastewater Operator or Grade A Surface Water Treatment Certificate upon hire. Possession of Land Application or Grade I Physical/Chemical certification or the ability to obtain within 24 months of employment.
